Femi Falana Demands Legal Action Against Extrajudicial Killings and Banditry in Nigeria

Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has called on the Federal Government to take urgent legal measures to address the rising cases of extrajudicial killings and banditry across the country.

Speaking during a recent public forum on security and human rights, Falana condemned the persistent culture of impunity surrounding unlawful killings, noting that victims and their families are often denied justice.

According to him, Nigeria cannot effectively tackle insecurity without holding security agencies and criminal elements accountable through proper judicial processes.

“The constitution is clear. No citizen should be deprived of life outside the due process of law. Extrajudicial killings not only violate human rights but also weaken public trust in law enforcement,” Falana stated.

The senior lawyer also criticized the government’s handling of the fight against banditry, warning that the failure to prosecute perpetrators has emboldened violent groups, particularly in the northern regions.

He urged both federal and state authorities to strengthen the justice system by ensuring fair trials, prosecuting offenders, and providing adequate compensation to victims’ families.

“We cannot build a safe and democratic society when lives are taken with impunity. The government must show political will by bringing both state and non-state actors who commit such crimes before the courts,” Falana added.

Background

Nigeria has witnessed a surge in banditry, kidnappings, and extrajudicial killings in recent years, with security forces often accused of using excessive force. Rights groups have repeatedly criticized the lack of accountability, while citizens continue to demand stronger legal safeguards.

Call for Reform

Falana reiterated his call for police reform, insisting that adherence to the rule of law is the only way to curb widespread insecurity. He further appealed to civil society organizations and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to intensify advocacy for justice and human rights protection.
