Kaduna Govt Cautions Private Schools on Increasing Fees Without Authorization

The Kaduna State Government has issued a stern warning to private school operators across the state, cautioning them against increasing tuition or other charges without first securing official approval from the appropriate authorities.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Education, the government stressed that it had observed with concern the growing trend of arbitrary fee hikes by some private schools, especially at the start of new academic sessions. Officials described the practice as exploitative and capable of placing an unnecessary burden on parents and guardians already grappling with rising living costs.

The ministry noted that while it recognizes the vital role private schools play in complementing public education, operators must adhere strictly to existing guidelines. Any upward review of fees, it said, must be formally vetted and approved to ensure fairness and protect the interests of learners and their families.

“Private education providers are reminded that they operate within the framework of state regulations. No school has the authority to unilaterally increase fees without the express permission of the government,” the statement read.

The government further warned that defaulters risk facing sanctions, which may include fines, suspension of licenses, or outright closure of non-compliant schools.

Parents were also encouraged to report any cases of unauthorized fee increases to the Ministry of Education for prompt investigation and necessary action.

The statement reaffirmed Kaduna State’s commitment to ensuring access to quality and affordable education for all children, stressing that the regulation of school fees is an important part of that agenda.
