The Lagos State Government has declared Sunday, August 20, a public holiday in recognition of Isese Day, an annual celebration dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Yoruba traditional religion and cultural heritage.
Isese Day, observed by traditional worshippers across Yoruba-speaking communities, is aimed at honoring the customs, values, and spiritual practices of the Yoruba people. The holiday is seen as a way of giving equal recognition to indigenous faiths alongside other major religions observed in the state.
In a statement issued by the Lagos State Ministry of Home Affairs, the government emphasized the importance of cultural inclusivity and the need to protect Yoruba traditions for future generations. Officials noted that the celebration would feature prayers, cultural displays, and community gatherings across the state.
“This declaration is part of our commitment to preserve our rich cultural identity, ensure freedom of religious practice, and strengthen unity among diverse faith groups in Lagos,” the statement read.
Traditional leaders and cultural enthusiasts have welcomed the development, describing it as a milestone in the recognition of Yoruba heritage. They expressed hope that the annual holiday would help younger generations connect more deeply with their roots while promoting tolerance and respect for cultural diversity.
With the declaration, Lagos joins other Yoruba-speaking states that have institutionalized Isese Day as a statutory holiday, reinforcing the cultural pride of the region.
