The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has clarified that no conclusive decision has been reached concerning its ongoing industrial action.
This clarification follows a negotiation session held on Thursday, 1st August 2025, involving the association and key government stakeholders. Present at the meeting were the Ministers of Health and Social Welfare, Labour and Employment, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, representatives from the National Industrial Salaries and Wages Commission, and the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.
A statement issued on Friday and signed by Ofere Oluwatonyin, Deputy General Secretary and Head of Organisation and Professional Service, on behalf of the General Secretary, stated that the association’s National Executive Council (NEC) will deliberate on the meeting’s outcome before a final resolution is made.
“Following the outcome of the negotiation meeting held today, 1st August 2025, the National Secretariat wishes to inform all NANNM members that a final decision will not be made until the outcome of the meeting is reviewed and ratified by the National Executive Council (NEC) in an emergency meeting scheduled to hold on Saturday, 2nd August 2025 via Zoom,” the statement read.
NANNM reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, due process, and the collective welfare of its members.
Despite the high-level discussions, union leaders declined to speak to reporters after the meeting, choosing not to disclose any agreed terms.
The strike, which commenced on July 29, has disrupted services at federal health institutions nationwide. NANNM had initiated the action in protest of the federal government’s continued neglect of issues affecting nurses and midwives, including unpaid allowances, inadequate welfare, and poor working conditions.
