In a shocking development, security operatives at a bus terminal in Maiduguri, Borno State, have arrested a Nigerian soldier on leave after he was allegedly caught with 350 rounds of live ammunition hidden inside a sack.
The arrest, which occurred on Friday, has raised fresh concerns about arms diversion and security lapses within the military ranks amid ongoing insurgency threats in the region.
According to preliminary investigations, the soldier, whose identity has not been officially disclosed, was intercepted during a routine security check at the motor park. Upon inspection, operatives discovered several rounds of ammunition concealed within a sack of food items.
A source within the security team told reporters that the suspect had claimed he was traveling to a neighboring state when the discovery was made.
“He said he was going home on leave, but the quantity and concealment of the ammunition raised suspicion. We had to take him into custody immediately,” the source said.
Authorities have since transferred the suspect to a military facility for further interrogation and disciplinary action. Meanwhile, an internal investigation has reportedly been launched to determine the source and intended use of the ammunition.
The Nigerian Army has yet to issue an official statement on the incident as of press time.
This incident adds to growing scrutiny over the conduct of some military personnel, especially in the northeastern region, where Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists continue to pose a threat.
