Inspector-General Egbetokun Begins Renewed Harassment Of Sowore Over Police Promotion Scandal Involving His Mistresses

In a developing and controversial twist, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has reportedly launched a fresh wave of harassment against activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore.

According to multiple sources, the renewed clampdown is allegedly linked to recent investigative reports exposing a promotion scandal involving some of Egbetokun's alleged mistresses within the Nigeria Police Force. The reports, which have sparked national outrage, accused the police hierarchy of favoritism and abuse of power in fast-tracking certain female officers to higher ranks despite limited years of service.

Sowore, a long-time critic of government excesses and abuse of office, has been vocal on social media and through his online platform, Sahara Reporters, in spotlighting the promotion of one Bukola Kuti—reportedly close to the IGP—from Superintendent of Police to Assistant Commissioner of Police within just 10 years of service.

Sources close to Sowore allege that operatives have been surveilling his movement, issuing threats, and attempting to intimidate him into silence. The alleged harassment comes amidst calls for an independent investigation into the promotions and the broader state of integrity within the police system.

Human rights groups and civil society organizations have condemned the move, describing it as an attempt to stifle press freedom and muzzle critics who hold public officials accountable.

As of press time, neither the Nigeria Police Force nor the Office of the Inspector-General has released an official response to the allegations of harassment or the promotion scandal.
