Nigerian Nurses Union Suspends Nationwide Strike, Orders Immediate Resumption of Work

The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has officially called off its nationwide warning strike and directed all its members across the country to resume work immediately.

This announcement was made following a crucial virtual meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) held after a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with the Federal Government.

“The strike has been suspended. Nurses and midwives are to resume duty immediately,” said Chidi Aligwe, Assistant Secretary-General of NANNM.

Government Response

After several negotiations, the government agreed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding, outlining commitments and timelines to meet the union’s demands.

The NEC, in a circular signed by President Haruna Mamman and Secretary-General T.A. Shettima, directed all nurses to resume work immediately. The circular also warned against any form of victimization of nurses who participated in the strike.

What’s Next?

While the strike is now suspended, the union emphasized that it will closely monitor the government’s implementation of the MoU. They have not ruled out future actions if the agreed timelines are not honored.

Impact of the Strike

During the strike, services in many hospitals across the country were crippled. From emergency care to routine treatments, public health facilities struggled with staff shortages, leaving patients in distress.
