Passengers traveling both domestically and internationally faced extended delays and sudden cancellations, as airline operators struggled to adapt to the sudden weather shift. Several travelers expressed frustration over lack of communication, with many stranded at the terminal since the early morning hours.
A spokesperson for Air Peace, one of Nigeria’s leading airlines, confirmed the situation in a brief statement, saying:
“Due to adverse weather conditions caused by the current heavy rainfall in Lagos, some of our scheduled flights have been delayed or grounded entirely. Passenger safety is our top priority, and we urge all travelers to remain patient as we monitor the situation closely.”
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had earlier issued a weather alert predicting intense rainfall and thunderstorms across the Southwest, including Lagos, warning of possible flooding and travel disruption between Monday and Wednesday.
Airlines have since activated contingency plans, with some flights being rerouted or rescheduled to minimize further disruptions. Meanwhile, airport authorities are advising passengers to confirm flight status with their airlines before heading to the airport.
The downpour, which began in the early hours of Monday, has also caused traffic congestion in major parts of the city, compounding the frustration for travelers and commuters alike.
As of press time, operations remain partially suspended, and more weather updates are expected in the coming hours.
📢 Passengers are advised to:
- Contact airlines for real-time updates
- Arrive early to accommodate security and weather delays
- Remain patient and prioritize safety
