The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results for school candidates across Nigeria and West Africa. The results were made public on Monday, August 4, 2025.
A total of 1,973,284 candidates registered, and 1,969,313 candidates actually sat for the examination, according to WAEC’s head of Nigeria’s national office, Dr. Amos Dangut. Unfortunately, this year's results reflect a significant decline in student performance when compared to 2024.
🔻 Sharp Decline in Core Subject Performance
Only 38.32% of the candidates obtained credits and above in a minimum of five subjects including English Language and Mathematics—a major drop from the 72.12% recorded in 2024. This represents a 33.8% decline, raising serious concerns among education stakeholders.
However, about 87.24% of the candidates earned credits in five or more subjects, regardless of English and Mathematics, a relatively better overall performance metric.
