In a statement released on Wednesday, Kanu’s lead lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, expressed deep concern over what he described as judicial bias and the erosion of legal standards in the treatment of his client. He argued that the Supreme Court, rather than acting as a neutral authority, appears to have taken sides in a politically sensitive case.
“What we are witnessing is a blatant disregard for the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The Supreme Court has unfortunately aligned itself with the Federal Government, acting not as a neutral arbiter but as a party with vested interest,” Ejiofor stated.
Ejiofor lamented that despite multiple court rulings and appeals, Kanu has remained in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), which he described as a violation of fundamental human rights and due process. He warned that the actions of the court set a dangerous precedent for democracy and judicial independence in Nigeria.
Nnamdi Kanu has been detained since 2021 following his controversial extradition to Nigeria. His prolonged detention continues to draw condemnation from human rights organizations, both within and outside the country.
Ejiofor added that the legal team remains committed to seeking justice not only in Nigeria but also through international legal channels, stressing that the credibility of the nation’s judiciary is now under intense scrutiny.
